What drain cleaning costs in Boise in 2026
Two Boise-area companies publish a standard band for the work. Plumbing Solutions of Idaho, whose service area lists Boise, Meridian, Caldwell, Eagle, Kuna, Middleton, Nampa and Star, says most standard drain cleaning jobs it does cost between $100 and $300, and it runs a $25 off coupon on the service. Honor Plumbing, covering Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, Eagle, Kuna and Garden City, publishes drain cleaning pricing starting at $180. Neither page carries a date, and the newest dated item on the Plumbing Solutions page is a 2023 award badge, so treat both as advertised prices with some age on them.
National benchmarks land in the same neighborhood. HomeAdvisor, updated June 17, 2026, reports an average of $246 with a cost box labeled Normal Range: $147 - $352, on survey figures the page itself labels 2025 Data. Thumbtack runs wider at $186 to $549 nationally, with a stated low end of $85 and a high end of $1,223. Homewyse estimates $137 to $341 per drain as of January 2026, built on a two-hour minimum labor charge and excluding sales tax on materials plus any permit or inspection fees the local building department requires.
Then there are the specials. Perfect Plumbing, Heating and Air advertises a $99 drain clearing service with same-day availability, and Apple Plumbing and Bath advertises a $99 special for clearing clogged drains. Both publish service areas stretching well past the Treasure Valley, Perfect as far out as McCall, Mountain Home and Payette, so those figures are company promotions rather than a Boise going rate.

The drain you are unclogging sets the price
HomeAdvisor's fixture-level pricing explains most of that spread. A kitchen sink or garbage disposal line runs $110 to $215. A toilet lands at roughly $110 to $275. On hair clogs in a bathtub or shower drain, the guide says a pro usually charges about $225 to pull them free. The main sewer line is the outlier at $100 to $800, because that job depends on where the blockage sits and how the line can be reached.
Main line work carries its own average. HomeAdvisor's separate sewer line page puts main sewer line clog repair at $376, with a cost box reading Normal Range: $187 - $569. Its method pricing on the same page: snaking a drain costs $100 to $250, hydro jetting for a sewer cleanout runs $350 to $600, and a sewer camera inspection is listed at $200 to $1,300 or more.
Homewyse's main line estimate sits lower, at $129 to $340 per sewer main as of January 2026, and its stated scope shows why. That figure covers augering the fixture drain line through the main waste line to the service connection, rental of a one-third horsepower electric pipe rooter sized for three to ten inch pipe, and a two-hour minimum labor charge. A number that low assumes the cable reaches the clog on the first try.

Snaking, jetting, and the camera that settles it
Method is a pipe-condition question before it is a price question. Plumbing Solutions of Idaho describes snaking as suitable for minor, localized blockages, while hydro jetting is more comprehensive, cleaning the entire pipe length and removing all types of debris. Cloverdale Plumbing, a Boise company founded in 1953, describes jetting as scouring the inside of the pipe to clear buildup and restore diameter, and names kitchen lines with chronic grease issues, commercial drains and sewer lines with heavy buildup as where it earns its keep.
Price follows method. Thumbtack lists snaking at $195 and hydro jetting between $350 and $600, with complex work running as high as $1,000. HomeAdvisor's jetting page puts standard residential service at $350 to $600 with an average of $475, while noting that minor issues might cost as little as $100 and severe blockages requiring extensive work can reach $2,000.
Camera pricing is where scope discipline matters most. HomeAdvisor's national inspection page reports an average of $996, most homeowners spending between $271 and $1,726, and a full spread of $100 to $6,000, which it attributes to the length of the sewer line and how easy it is to access. Around Boise the figures look different: Boise Sewer Scopes says most inspections around Boise run between $150 to $300, take 30 to 60 minutes, and come with a copy of the video, and Treasure Valley Home Inspectors publishes sewer scopes at $125 to $175. A camera quote here that approaches the national average deserves a question about what it includes.
Before anyone jets an older line, condition gets checked first. Plumbing Solutions states that hydro jetting is generally safe for most pipes except those that are aged or already compromised, and that it performs a video inspection of the pipes to confirm jetting is a suitable and safe method. HomeAdvisor adds that reputable companies often conduct preliminary video inspections, costing $275 to $1,800, to evaluate pipe condition before proceeding, and that professionals can adjust water pressure or recommend an alternative method when a pipe shows signs of deterioration. Cloverdale puts it plainly: a professional should evaluate pipe condition and the type of buildup before recommending jetting.
Grease and roots run the main lines here
The City of Boise names fats, oils and grease the number one cause of clogs, backups and overflows both at home and down the line in its water renewal system, and warns that older Boise neighborhoods are especially at risk of backups when residents do not dispose of it properly. The city sewer is over 1000 miles of pipe moving used water from homes and businesses to the water renewal facilities, and Public Works takes reports of back-ups, line breaks and construction issues at (208) 608-7200.
Roots are the other half of the story. A peer-reviewed review of root intrusion in sewer systems reports that roots are blamed for more than 50% of all sewer blockages, and that root removal may cost about one-sixth the cost of pipe replacement or renewal, which is why the authors conclude preventative maintenance on the older parts of a sewer system is worthwhile. Cloverdale Plumbing makes the local version of the same point, noting that Boise homes range from newer subdivisions to older neighborhoods with aging drain lines, and that mature landscaping can turn root intrusion into a recurring contributor to main-line backups.
Pipe material raises the stakes on those older blocks. Bent Nail Inspections states that older Boise homes may have brittle clay or concrete pipes that are prone to cracking, and its sewer scope sends a high-definition camera down the lateral line connecting the house to the city sewer or septic tank in about an hour. That is the inspection worth buying before anyone decides to jet a line in one of those neighborhoods.
The bottle under the sink costs more than it saves
HomeAdvisor's guidance on store-bought drain openers is blunt. Most liquid cleaners rely on caustic chemicals that eat through hair and grime, but they also erode metal and even some plastics over time, and repeated use strips protective pipe coatings and can leave you with leaks or premature failures. Its advice when hot water or a plunger fails is to call a plumber for mechanical removal instead of pouring more chemicals down the line. That is a mechanical problem, not a chemical one.
The chemistry earns that caution. The National Capital Poison Center notes that acidic drain cleaners contain sulfuric and hydrochloric acids while alkaline ones contain sodium and potassium hydroxide, that corrosive or caustic drain cleaners can cause pain, irritation and burns on contact with skin, and that people who drink drain cleaner can experience severe chemical burns and damage to the mouth, throat, esophagus and stomach. Poison Control answers at 1-800-222-1222.
Do-it-yourself snaking carries a different risk. HomeAdvisor says aggressive snaking can scratch pipes, push debris deeper, or even crack older lines, and that the risk stays low with an experienced plumber who matches the cable size to the pipe and eases the snake through bends instead of forcing it. Experience and the right cable size are what separate a cleared line from a cracked one.
Permits, after-hours rates, and what to ask
Idaho handles plumbing permits at the state level. The Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses says a permit is required when any electrical, plumbing or HVAC work is performed, and that homeowners may purchase a permit only for work on their primary or secondary residence and related outbuildings, never for commercial buildings. A permit expires 365 days after the purchase date or last inspection and can be renewed for another year with division approval and a $65 renewal fee. Inspections are scheduled through the state eTRAKiT system or by phone at 208-332-4700, per the division's permits and inspections page. The division publishes no drain-cleaning-specific exemption, so ask any contractor whether the job being quoted pulls a permit.
Labor is the other half of every quote. HomeAdvisor's rate ladder runs $45 to $90 an hour for an apprentice, $60 to $110 for a journeyperson, and $80 to $200 for a master plumber, with service call fees of $100 to $250 that usually include the first hour and trip fees of $50 to $300 depending on distance. Its sewer and drain page describes the same basis from the other direction, $45 to $200 an hour against a minimum service fee of about $200, and puts flat rates at $100 to $400 for simple service calls such as unclogging a drain.
The clock moves the bill as much as the clog does. HomeAdvisor reports that most plumbers charge time and a half to triple their hourly rate depending on when the call comes in, with some billing time and a half for evening work, double time for weekends and triple time for holidays, while others use a flat emergency fee of $300 to $400 or more. When the water is contained, morning is cheaper, and our Boise emergency plumber guide covers that tradeoff. When a backup has already reached flooring or drywall, our Boise water damage restoration cost guide picks up where the drain bill stops.
Three questions before you book: which fixture the plumber expects the clog to sit under, whether a camera inspection is included or billed separately, and what the price does if the cable fails to clear the line on the first pass.

HomeAdvisor - How Much Does a Sewer Line Camera Inspection Cost? (updated June 19, 2026)Questions Treasure Valley homeowners ask
How much does drain cleaning cost in Boise?
Plumbing Solutions of Idaho, serving Boise, Meridian, Nampa and neighboring cities, says most standard drain cleaning jobs it does cost between $100 and $300, and Honor Plumbing publishes pricing starting at $180 across a similar area. Both pages are undated, so those are advertised prices rather than a live market survey. The national benchmark from HomeAdvisor, updated June 17, 2026, is a $246 average inside a Normal Range of $147 to $352, and Thumbtack's national range is $186 to $549.
Why do some Treasure Valley plumbers advertise $99 drain clearing?
Because it is a promotion, not a market rate. Perfect Plumbing, Heating and Air advertises a $99 drain clearing service with same-day availability, and Apple Plumbing and Bath advertises a $99 special for clearing clogged drains. Both companies publish service areas that reach well beyond the Treasure Valley, so the offers are not Boise-specific pricing. Plumbing Solutions of Idaho also runs a $25 off drain cleaning coupon. Ask what the special covers, and what the price becomes when the clog turns out to be in the main line, which HomeAdvisor prices nationally at $100 to $800.
Should my line be snaked or hydro jetted?
Plumbing Solutions of Idaho describes snaking as suitable for minor, localized blockages, and hydro jetting as the more comprehensive option that cleans the entire pipe length and removes all types of debris. Cloverdale Plumbing points jetting at kitchen lines with chronic grease issues, commercial drains and sewer lines with heavy buildup. On price, HomeAdvisor puts snaking at $100 to $250 and jetting at $350 to $600 with a $475 average; Thumbtack lists snaking at $195 and jetting from $350 to $600, with complex work as high as $1,000.
Is hydro jetting safe for older Boise pipes?
Only after someone looks inside. Plumbing Solutions of Idaho states that hydro jetting is generally safe for most pipes except those that are aged or already compromised, and that it runs a video inspection first to confirm jetting is suitable and safe. HomeAdvisor says reputable companies often conduct preliminary video inspections, costing $275 to $1,800, and that professionals can adjust water pressure or recommend an alternative method for pipes showing deterioration. Cloverdale Plumbing states that a professional should evaluate pipe condition and the type of buildup before recommending jetting. Bent Nail Inspections notes that older Boise homes may have brittle clay or concrete pipes that are prone to cracking.
How much is a sewer scope in Boise?
Boise Sewer Scopes says most inspections around Boise run between $150 to $300, take 30 to 60 minutes, and include a copy of the video. Treasure Valley Home Inspectors publishes sewer scopes at $125 to $175, alongside $350 to $550 for most Boise home inspections depending on size, age and crawlspace complexity. National figures run far higher: HomeAdvisor puts the camera inspection average at $996, with most homeowners spending $271 to $1,726 and the full spread reaching $100 to $6,000 based on line length and access. Use the local numbers when you budget.
Are liquid drain cleaners safe for my pipes?
HomeAdvisor says most liquid cleaners rely on caustic chemicals that eat through hair and grime, but also erode metal and even some plastics over time, and that repeated use strips protective pipe coatings and can leave you with leaks or premature failures. Its recommendation when hot water or a plunger does not help is to call a plumber for mechanical removal. The National Capital Poison Center adds the health side: acidic products contain sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, alkaline ones contain sodium and potassium hydroxide, and contact can cause pain, irritation and burns. Poison Control answers at 1-800-222-1222.
Why do older Boise neighborhoods back up more often?
Two causes stack up there. The City of Boise names fats, oils and grease the number one cause of clogs, backups and overflows both at home and in its water renewal system, and says older Boise neighborhoods are especially at risk when residents do not dispose of it properly. Roots do the rest: peer-reviewed research reports roots are blamed for more than 50% of all sewer blockages, and Cloverdale Plumbing notes that mature landscaping can make root intrusion a recurring contributor to main-line backups. Bent Nail Inspections adds that older Boise homes may have brittle clay or concrete pipes prone to cracking. For a public-side sewer back-up, line break or construction issue, City of Boise Public Works takes calls at (208) 608-7200.
