Emergency Plumber in Star, Idaho: Costs and Who to Call (2026)

No source publishes a Star-specific emergency plumbing rate table, so every price below is a national 2026 figure. Use them as a sanity check on the quote you get at 11 p.m.

Housecall Pro's 2026 plumbing price guide, posted June 5, 2026, puts standard residential work at $80 to $130 per hour and emergency or after-hours work at $150 to $300 per hour, or 1.5-3x the standard rate. NearbyHunt's guide, updated February 23, 2026, breaks that premium out hour by hour:

Labor is half the invoice. NearbyHunt puts the dispatch fee at $150 to $250 for standard calls and $200 to $400 for after-hours and holiday dispatches. AllBetter, updated August 10, 2026, prices that fee on its own scale: $75 to $150 in business hours, $175 to $300 late at night, $200 to $400 on a holiday. Three national guides, three answers to one question. Cite them one at a time, since averaging produces a number nobody published.

A local figure does exist, and it is a utility charge rather than a plumber's. Star Sewer and Water District's rate schedule lists a reconnect fee of $25 during office hours against $100 after hours. Same task, different hour, different fee.

Private plumbers here are not uniform about it. A-V Plumbing's Star service page advertises 24/7 emergency service with no added fees and no after-hours fees under Idaho license RCE-67013, worth knowing before you assume a surcharge is standard everywhere. NearbyHunt records the other practice: Some companies add a separate fuel or travel surcharge of $25 to $75 for after-hours dispatches. Ask which kind you are calling before the truck rolls, and get the dispatch fee named out loud.

Cloverdale Plumbing, a Boise-metro operator, defines a plumbing emergency as any plumbing problem that can quickly cause water damage, sewage exposure, loss of essential water service, or a safety hazard, and lists these examples:

• Active leaks you can't control (burst pipe, failed supply line, leaking water heater)
• Overflowing toilet or sewage backing up (especially if more than one drain is affected)
• No hot water from a leaking or failing water heater
• Frozen pipes (or signs they're frozen)

AllBetter's version of the test: A true emergency means active water damage or a safety hazard; everything else can wait for standard rates. A dripping faucet at 9 p.m. keeps until Tuesday morning. A supply line spraying under the sink earns the surcharge.

Gas is its own category. Intermountain Gas Company answers a 24-hour emergency line at 800-548-3679. If you smell gas, its instructions are: Evacuate everyone immediately, including pets; Leave the door open behind you as you evacuate the premises; Do not use a telephone or cell phone inside the building; Do not flip light switches; pull plugs or operate electrical devices; Do not smoke or light matches; and Do not re-enter the building until you are told it is safe to do so. Call from outside.

Learn the shutoff order on a dry afternoon. Cloverdale's guidance runs three levels deep: Fixture shutoff valves (toilet, sink): usually behind/under the fixture, then Water heater cold-water shutoff, then Main water shutoff: commonly near where the service line enters the home (sometimes a basement/crawlspace/mechanical room). Ten minutes locating the main in daylight beats the same ten minutes at midnight.

The same page carries a safety line worth reading twice: If water is near outlets, appliances, or a breaker panel, avoid standing water and switch off power to the affected area if you can do so safely. That closing clause governs the sentence. If reaching the panel means standing in water, leave it for the crew arriving with equipment.

Outside those hours its Contact Us page lists named after-hours contacts for water emergencies and for sewer backups or blockages. Bookmark that page before a Saturday night needs it.

The City of Star's adopted design criteria list a frost line depth of 24 inches, a winter design temperature of 10 degrees (F), and an annual mean temperature of 51.1. That design temperature describes the night an unwrapped crawlspace run finds out how well it was insulated.

Travelers' prevention list is cheap and dull, which is the point: Keep the heat in your home set at a minimum of 55 degrees, let water drip from faucets on pipes at risk, and Open the doors on cabinets where plumbing is located. Should a pipe freeze anyway, the same guidance says to Locate and close the main water shutoff valve as soon as possible and before temperatures rise above freezing, and never to use torches or heat guns, as these can create fire hazards.

Plumbing Price Guide, last updated May 22, 2026, lands on that same burst-pipe band with a qualifier attached, $500 to $2,000 for the plumbing work alone, and prices thawing by itself at $150 to $300.

The plumbing invoice is rarely the whole bill. That same guide adds $1,000 to $5,000 or more for water damage restoration, depending on how long the water ran and what it reached. PuroClean's 2026 guide prices clean-water restoration at $3-$4 per square foot and reports a national 2026 average of $3,860, typical ranges $1,383 to $6,370. Insurers see the same shape from their side: water damage and freezing claims averaged $13,954 paid per claim over 2018-2022, per ISO data published by the Insurance Information Institute, a five-year weighted average for homeowners multiple peril policies that excludes tenants and condominium policies.

Idaho draws a clean line around repair work. Idaho Code 54-2621 says a permit shall not be required for the clearing of stoppages or repairing of leaks in pipes, valves, fixtures, appliances or appurtenances of any plumbing system when such work does not involve or require any functional rearrangement of the system. Clear a stoppage, repair a leak, rearrange nothing, and you are inside that exemption.

Cross the line and Idaho Code 54-2620 applies, making it unlawful to do any construction, installation, improvement, extension or alteration of any plumbing system without first procuring a permit from the division of occupational and professional licenses. Idaho DOPL puts it plainly: A permit is required when any electrical, plumbing or HVAC work is performed, and Homeowners may purchase a permit only when they are doing electrical, plumbing, or HVAC work on their primary or secondary residence and related outbuildings. The licensing act carries its own carve-out at Idaho Code 54-2602(1)(a), exempting Any person who does plumbing work in a single or duplex family dwelling where that person owns or is buying the premises and still meets the chapter's minimum standards.

Star has adopted the 2017 Idaho State Plumbing Code (ISPC) based on the 2015 Uniform Plumbing Code, so the book everyone works from is the state's, and Star's split geography changes nothing about it. The city sits in northwestern Ada County with parts stretching into Canyon County, and the permit comes from the state division on either side of that line. The license takes years to earn: an Idaho journeyman must Obtain 8,000hrs of Work Experience AND 4 years of approved schooling OR Obtain 16,000hrs of Work Experience, then pass the IAPMO exam through PSI.
