Cheapest Car Insurance in Idaho (2026)

Published by QuestTracking · every figure checked against 13 cited sources · how we work

The bottom lineStatewide · Idaho

Idaho is one of the cheapest car insurance states in the country, but the 2026 rate studies disagree sharply on the actual number: full coverage averages $952 a year in MoneyGeek's July 2026 study, $1,577 a year in Experian's August 2026 marketplace data, and $1,998 a year in NerdWallet's August 2026 analysis. The spread is methodology, not disagreement about Idaho — MoneyGeek prices a 40-year-old in a 2012 Toyota Camry LE, while NerdWallet prices a 35-year-old in a 2023 Camry. Minimum coverage runs far less: $428 a year per MoneyGeek and $434 a year per NerdWallet. Because no single study describes any one Idaho driver, the only rate that matters is the one carriers quote on your car and your record.

What Idaho drivers actually pay in 2026

Idaho sits well under the national average in every 2026 rate study, and no two studies agree on the number. MoneyGeek's July 2026 study puts Idaho full coverage at $79 per month ($952 per year). NerdWallet's August 2026 analysis puts it at $1,998 per year, about $167 per month. Experian's August 2026 marketplace data lands between them at $1,577 per year.

StudyFull coverageMinimum coverageWhat it prices
MoneyGeek, July 2026$952 per year$428 per year40-year-old, 2012 Camry LE, 100/300/100, $1,000 deductible
Experian, August 2026$1,577 per year$838 per yearMarketplace policy and quote data, trailing 12 complete months
NerdWallet, August 2026$1,998 per year$434 per year35-year-old, 2023 Camry LE, 100/300/50, $1,000 deductible
ValuePenguin, July 2026About $127 per month$48 per month30-year-old, 2018 Honda Civic EX, 50/100/50, $500 deductible

The gap is the driver and the product, not the state. MoneyGeek prices a 40-year-old in a 2012 Toyota Camry LE; NerdWallet prices a 35-year-old in a 2023 Camry. ValuePenguin's full coverage buys 50/100/50 limits with a $500 deductible, while MoneyGeek and NerdWallet both price 100/300 limits with a $1,000 deductible — three different policies, so the numbers are not interchangeable.

Against its own national figure, MoneyGeek's Idaho average of $79 per month is about 36% below the $124 per month it found nationwide. Idaho also has very few uninsured drivers — 6.4% in 2023 per the Insurance Research Council, against 15.4% nationally — which keeps uninsured-claim costs out of everyone's premium.

What moves an Idaho rate the most

Credit is the biggest controllable lever in the state. In MoneyGeek's July 2026 Idaho data, good-credit drivers pay $77 per month for full coverage and poor-credit drivers pay $316 — a $239 monthly difference, or $2,868 a year, with the driver, the car and the coverage held identical.

A DUI is the next big step. MoneyGeek puts Idaho full coverage after a DUI at $137 per month ($1,649 per year), 67% above the $82 clean-record rate for the same 40-year-old profile. NerdWallet's August 2026 analysis separately names American National the cheapest Idaho insurer after a DUI at $1,462 for a 35-year-old — a different driver, so read it as its own figure rather than a comparison.

Age does the rest, and it moves on its own. MoneyGeek's Idaho age curve runs $2,244 a year at 16, $1,935 at 18, $1,572 at 21 and $1,214 at 25 for full coverage — the same policy, nine birthdays apart.

Idaho's 25/50/15 minimum, and what skipping it costs

Idaho requires liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $15,000 for property damage. The dollar amounts sit in Idaho Code § 49-117(20), the definition of proof of financial responsibility — not in the chapter many competing pages cite. Idaho Code § 49-1229 requires owners to provide that coverage continuously, so a lapse is itself the violation, whether or not anyone pulls you over.

The Idaho Department of Insurance adds coverage most drivers never think about: insurers must provide uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage unless the named insured rejects it in writing, using the state's Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured Motorist Disclosure Form. Given how low 25/50/15 sits against a real crash bill, read that form before signing the coverage away.

A first violation is an infraction with a $75 fine. Idaho Code § 49-1232 requires proof of insurance in the vehicle — paper or electronic, including an image on a phone — and a second or subsequent conviction within five years becomes a misdemeanor carrying a fine up to $1,000, up to six months in county jail, or both. Convictions under §§ 49-1229, 49-1232 and 49-1428 stack inside that five-year window.

SR-22 filings run on three different clocks

Idaho Code § 49-1208 sets three separate filing periods, and most pages get the first one wrong. After a suspension or revocation, proof runs three years commencing with the last day of the suspension or revocation — the clock starts when the suspension ends, not when the ticket was written. A first conviction under §§ 49-1229, 49-1232 or 49-1428 requires proof throughout the one-year period following the conviction. A second or subsequent violation within five years requires three years.

The filing goes to the Idaho Transportation Department, not the Department of Insurance. As of January 1, 2025, SR22/26 information must be submitted to the State of Idaho Insurance Verification System, which updates the driver record automatically; drivers can check status free through the DMV online portal.

Reinstatement is billed separately from the premium. ITD lists $285 to reinstate after a DUI and $245 after an administrative license suspension. A restricted driving permit carries a $60.00 application fee, and the $245 fee has to be paid before the permit is issued — $305 total.

How to actually pay less in Idaho

The cheapest company in Idaho changes with the study, which is the whole argument for quoting several carriers instead of trusting one ranking.

  • MoneyGeek, August 2026: GEICO cheapest for full coverage at $53 per month, State Farm $54, American National $57.
  • NerdWallet, August 2026: Travelers cheapest for full coverage at $808 per year; American National cheapest for minimum coverage at $210 per year.
  • ValuePenguin, July 2026: State Farm cheapest at $85 per month full coverage and $26 per month liability-only, against a $48 per month liability-only state average.
  • Experian, August 2026: Liberty Mutual - Direct cheapest at $1,096 per year full coverage and $564 per year minimum.

Four studies, four different winners — that is the case for running your own numbers rather than buying the top row of somebody's list. Location matters too: MoneyGeek ranks Boise 213th out of 260 Idaho cities for full-coverage cost and attributes it to higher traffic density and crime rates. GEICO is Boise's cheapest full coverage at $54 per month ($643 per year), 40% below the Boise city average, while the same GEICO policy costs $41 per month in Mountain Home and Glenns Ferry. Boise's cheapest minimum coverage is American National at $26 per month ($309 per year).

Two moves pay for themselves: repairing credit, worth $2,868 a year at the extremes in MoneyGeek's Idaho data, and comparing several carriers on identical limits and deductibles rather than on headline price.

Questions Treasure Valley homeowners actually ask

What is the cheapest car insurance company in Idaho?

It depends on which 2026 study you read, which is why quotes beat rankings. GEICO is cheapest for full coverage at $53 per month in MoneyGeek's August 2026 Idaho ranking, Travelers is cheapest at $808 per year in NerdWallet's August 2026 analysis, State Farm is cheapest at $85 per month in ValuePenguin's July 2026 study, and Liberty Mutual - Direct is cheapest at $1,096 per year in Experian's August 2026 marketplace data. Each study prices a different driver in a different car, so none of them predicts your rate.

What is the minimum car insurance required in Idaho?

Idaho requires $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident of bodily injury liability plus $15,000 of property damage liability, the limits written into Idaho Code § 49-117(20). Idaho Code § 49-1229 requires vehicle owners to carry that coverage continuously, not just when driving. The Idaho Department of Insurance adds that insurers must provide uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage unless the named insured rejects it in writing.

How much is car insurance in Boise?

Boise is more expensive than most of Idaho, not less. MoneyGeek's August 2026 Boise analysis ranks the city 213th out of 260 Idaho cities for full-coverage cost and attributes it to higher traffic density and crime rates. GEICO is Boise's cheapest full coverage at $54 per month ($643 per year), 40% below the city average, and the same GEICO policy costs $41 per month in Mountain Home and Glenns Ferry.

What is the penalty for driving without insurance in Idaho?

A first violation of Idaho Code § 49-1229 is an infraction punishable by a $75 fine, and a first failure to carry proof of insurance in the vehicle under § 49-1232 is also a $75 infraction. A second or subsequent conviction within five years is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine up to $1,000, up to six months in county jail, or both. Convictions under §§ 49-1229, 49-1232 and 49-1428 stack inside that five-year window.

How long does an SR-22 last in Idaho?

Idaho Code § 49-1208 sets three different periods. After a license suspension or revocation, proof is required for three years commencing with the last day of the suspension or revocation — the clock starts when the suspension ends, not on the citation date. A first conviction under §§ 49-1229, 49-1232 or 49-1428 requires one year of filing; a second or subsequent violation within five years requires three years.

Does credit affect car insurance rates in Idaho?

Heavily. MoneyGeek's July 2026 Idaho data shows good-credit drivers paying $77 per month for full coverage against $316 per month with poor credit — $239 more a month, or $2,868 a year, for the same 40-year-old driver in the same 2012 Toyota Camry LE with the same 100/300/100 limits. It is the largest single rate difference in that study, wider than the gap a DUI creates.

Why do 2026 studies report such different Idaho averages?

Different test drivers and different coverage. MoneyGeek prices a 40-year-old in a 2012 Toyota Camry LE at 100/300/100 limits; NerdWallet prices a 35-year-old in a 2023 Toyota Camry LE at 100/300/50; ValuePenguin prices a 30-year-old in a 2018 Honda Civic EX at 50/100/50 with a $500 deductible; Experian reports real marketplace policy and quote data over 12 complete months instead of a modeled driver. Averaging them produces a number that describes nobody.
