Renters Insurance in Boise, Idaho (2026): What It Costs

Quest Collective LLC · Meridian, Idaho

The bottom lineAda & Canyon counties, ID

Renters insurance in Boise averages $154 a year in MoneyGeek's Idaho study, dated August 1, 2026, priced on $20,000 in personal property protection, $100,000 in liability limits and a $500 deductible. Insuranceopedia's June 10, 2026 update puts Boise higher, at $19 per month or $228 per year, on $20,000 in personal property coverage with $100,000 in liability protection, while ValuePenguin lands at $21 per month for Boise on a wider bundle carrying $30,000 in personal property. Every one of those studies quoted a different renter on a different policy, so the coverage bundle printed beside a figure tells you more than the figure itself does.

What renters insurance costs in Boise in 2026

Four 2026 studies publish a Boise-specific renters figure, and each one prices a different policy. MoneyGeek's Idaho study, dated August 1, 2026, puts Boise at $154 a year on $20,000 in personal property protection, $100,000 in liability limits and a $500 deductible, which its city table records as $2 under the $156 Idaho average. Insuranceopedia, updated June 10, 2026, lands at $228 per year, or around $19 per month, on $20,000 in property coverage with $100,000 in liability.

Idaho reads cheap against the national benchmarks. NerdWallet's $145 statewide figure sits under the $151 national average in that same table, and Insurance Information Institute data sourced from the NAIC puts Idaho's average renters premium at $146 in 2021, fortieth among the states. Publishers disagree on the national figure too, $151 at NerdWallet against $182 at MoneyGeek, for the same reason the Boise figures do.

Why four studies give four Boise numbers

The distance between $154 and $228 measures the policies, not the city. Each publisher invents a test renter, quotes carriers on that person, and prints the result.

ValuePenguin collected 160 quotes from Idaho's 25 largest cities for a single 30-year-old woman who has never filed a claim before. Insuranceopedia's Boise page shows 74 quotes analyzed across 25 brands, with satisfaction inputs from J.D. Power and Consumer Reports. MoneyGeek weights its Idaho carrier ranking at 50% affordability, 40% customer satisfaction and 10% coverage options, so its best-of list blends price with service history.

SafeButler is the one to discount. Its Boise City page rests on quotes submitted through its own comparison platform and discloses that it compared 1 carrier in the area, for a 20-year-old student seeking basic coverage. Read $128 as one quote somebody received. Regulator data moves slower still: the NAIC's report for 2022, released May 21, 2025, found the HO-4 renters average premium increased by 0.6% between 2021 and 2022, without state-level detail.

What the policy covers inside a Boise apartment

The Insurance Information Institute describes the standard form plainly. Renters insurance protects your personal belongings against damage from fire, smoke, lightning, vandalism, theft, explosion, windstorm, water and other disasters listed in the policy. Liability protection answers lawsuits over bodily injury or property damage, and additional living expenses coverage pays when a covered disaster makes the unit uninhabitable.

Sub-limits are where renters get caught. Liability limits generally start at about $100,000, and the institute notes that some experts recommend at least $300,000 worth of protection. No-fault medical coverage for a guest hurt in your unit generally runs $1,000 to $5,000. Jewelry and other expensive items are generally covered up to $1,500 unless you schedule them separately. Belongings away from the apartment are limited to 10 percent of total possessions coverage, so $25,000 of possessions insurance may cover up to $2,500 for a laptop taken from a car. Replacement Cost coverage prices about 10 percent above Actual Cash Value, which decides whether a claim replaces a five-year-old couch or depreciates it. Ask for both on the same quote sheet.

Flood and earthquake sit outside the policy

The Idaho Department of Insurance, on a page last updated November 4, 2024, states that homeowner's and renter's insurance policies usually do not provide coverage for damages caused by flooding. Flood cover is bought separately, sometimes from insurers writing it in partnership with the federal government's National Flood Insurance Program.

Earthquake sits outside the standard form as well. The department writes that not all homeowner's and renter's insurance policies provide coverage for earthquake damage, and carriers that do offer it typically require a separate deductible, one that can run higher than the deductible for fire, smoke or wind. Idaho earns that footnote: KMVT reported the state ranks fifth in the nation for earthquake risk according to the Idaho Geological Survey.

Fire runs the other way, named on the covered-perils list in a city that watched the Foothills Fire burn approximately 2,000 acres in July 2026. Should a covered fire close your building, additional living expenses pays for somewhere to sleep.

How much coverage a Boise lease asks for

Idaho puts no renters insurance mandate on tenants. Insuranceopedia says it directly: renters insurance is not legally required by the state, but many landlords or property management companies may require tenants to have a policy in place.

MoneyGeek's coverage guidance sets the shape of a workable policy: most renters need $20,000 to $30,000 in personal property coverage, with at least $100,000 in liability as the baseline. Loss of use limits run around 20% to 30% of the personal property figure, and items over $1,000 to $2,500 need separate endorsements to be fully covered. Its landlord guide, updated August 12, 2026, puts the common lease requirement at $20,000 in property and $100,000 in liability.

Buying up costs less than most renters guess. MoneyGeek's national study prices $20,000 in property with $100,000 in liability at $182 a year, $50,000 at $310, $100,000 at $517, and $250,000 in property with $300,000 in liability at $1,084. Insuranceopedia's Boise deductible ladder pulls the other way, from $19 a month at $250 down to $11 at $2,000.

Buying it in Boise

The cheapest name changes with the study and the bundle behind it, which is the argument for quoting every carrier on identical limits:

  • MoneyGeek, Idaho at $20,000 property: USAA $88 a year, State Farm $89, American Family $133 and available statewide.
  • Insuranceopedia, Boise monthly: Oregon Mutual $7, MetLife $9, USAA $10, Nationwide $15, American Family $18.
  • ValuePenguin, Idaho at $30,000 property: State Farm $10 a month, Allstate $15, Amica $18, Progressive $19.
  • Insure.com, Idaho at $40,000 property with $300,000 liability: State Farm $139 a year, American Family $210, Nationwide $256.

Credit sits underneath all four lists. MoneyGeek's national data prices excellent credit at $153 a year, good credit at $182, fair credit at $242 and poor credit at $483.

Bundling is the discount carriers push hardest: State Farm advertises up to $900 in savings on renters and auto together, footnoted to a 2025 survey of its own new policyholders who reported savings, so read it as a ceiling. Our Idaho car insurance guide covers that line; the Boise home insurance guide covers the ownership side of the same building. Context behind the Boise number

Idaho's average renters (HO-4) premium was $146 in 2021, 40th among the states, against a countrywide average of $170.

Insurance Information Institute — Facts + Statistics: Renters insurance (NAIC data, 2021)

About 55% of U.S. renters (approximately 61 million people) carry renters insurance, while 45% remain uninsured. The publisher states no source year for the figure.

MoneyGeek — Facts and Statistics About Renters Insurance (updated June 11, 2026)

Idaho ranks fifth in the nation for earthquake risk according to the Idaho Geological Survey — and quake damage sits outside the standard renters form.

What Boise homeowners ask about coverage

How much is renters insurance in Boise per month?

Insuranceopedia's June 10, 2026 update puts Boise at $19 a month, or $228 a year, on $20,000 in personal property coverage with $100,000 in liability. ValuePenguin lands at $21 a month for Boise on a larger $30,000 property bundle. MoneyGeek's Boise figure is $154 a year at $20,000 in property, and that study publishes $13 a month as the matching Idaho statewide figure. Three publishers, three policies, three answers, so compare the bundle before you compare the price.

Is renters insurance required in Idaho?

The state does not require it. Insuranceopedia's Idaho guide says renters insurance is not legally required by the state, but many landlords or property management companies may require tenants to have a policy in place, and Hemlane's 2026 Idaho landlord-tenant guide reports the same habit in local leases. If your Boise lease names a coverage amount, MoneyGeek's landlord guidance puts the common ask at $20,000 in personal property coverage and $100,000 in liability coverage.

Does renters insurance cover fire and smoke damage in Boise?

Yes. Fire and smoke are both named on the Insurance Information Institute's list of perils a standard renters policy covers, alongside lightning, vandalism, theft, explosion, windstorm and water. That matters in this city: the Foothills Fire burned approximately 2,000 acres in the Boise Foothills in July 2026, and Boise Fire Assistant Chief Brad Bolen called it another reminder of just how fast fire can move in the Boise Foothills. If a covered fire makes your unit uninhabitable, additional living expenses coverage is the part that pays for somewhere to stay.

Does a renters policy cover earthquake damage in Idaho?

Usually it does not, on its own. The Idaho Department of Insurance says not all homeowner's and renter's insurance policies provide coverage for earthquake damage, and companies that do offer it typically require a separate deductible that can be higher than the deductible for fire, smoke, wind or hail. Idaho ranks fifth in the nation for earthquake risk according to the Idaho Geological Survey, whose record of the magnitude 6.5 Stanley earthquake of March 31, 2020 counts more than 3,200 aftershocks in the year that followed. Ask any carrier what an earthquake endorsement costs before you assume you carry one.

How much personal property coverage do I need in a Boise rental?

MoneyGeek's guidance is that most renters need $20,000 to $30,000 in personal property coverage with at least $100,000 in liability coverage. Loss of use limits run around 20% to 30% of the personal property figure, and items over $1,000 to $2,500 need separate endorsements to be fully covered. A tenant with high-end electronics, a home office, musical instruments or significant clothing and jewelry may need $50,000 or more to replace everything, per the same publisher's landlord guide. Walk the apartment with a camera before you pick a limit.

Which company is cheapest for renters insurance in Boise?

It depends on which study you read and what that study priced. Insuranceopedia's Boise table names Oregon Mutual cheapest at $7 a month, with MetLife at $9 and USAA at $10, on $20,000 in property coverage. MoneyGeek's Idaho table at the same property amount names USAA at $88 a year and State Farm at $89. ValuePenguin, pricing a bigger $30,000 bundle, puts State Farm at $10 a month ahead of Allstate at $15. Quote at least three carriers on identical limits and the same deductible before you pick one.

Is a higher deductible worth it on a renters policy?

The savings are visible but small in dollar terms, because the whole premium is small. Insuranceopedia's Boise ladder runs $19 a month at a $250 deductible, $18 at $500, $16 at $1,000, $14 at $1,500 and $11 at $2,000. MoneyGeek's national figures slope the same way, at $558, $517 and $479 a year for $500, $1,000 and $2,000 deductibles. Weigh that saving against writing the bigger check on the day you file a claim.
