What Idaho carriers quote in 2026
One 2026 carrier table exists for this state, and it prices a single person. MoneyGeek's Idaho page quotes a 40-year-old male nonsmoker in average health, 5 feet 9 inches and 160 pounds, buying $500,000 of 20-year term coverage. Twelve carriers answer between $46 and $59 a month.
| Carrier | Quoted rate |
|---|---|
| Banner Life | $46/mo ($551/yr) |
| Transamerica | $46/mo ($551/yr) |
| Penn Mutual | $47/mo ($562/yr) |
| Cincinnati Life | $49/mo ($593/yr) |
| Columbus | $53/mo ($632/yr) |
| Protective | $54/mo ($653/yr) |
| Pacific Life | $54/mo ($653/yr) |
| Nationwide | $56/mo ($677/yr) |
| Fidelity | $58/mo ($699/yr) |
| New York Life | $58/mo ($701/yr) |
| Prudential | $59/mo ($704/yr) |
| Guardian Life | $59/mo ($705/yr) |
Banner Life at $551 a year and Guardian Life at $705 are selling that man the identical death benefit, which is the whole argument for collecting more than one quote. The same page prices a younger buyer lower: Banner Life runs $21 to $25 a month for a 25-year-old taking $250,000 of 20-year term, against $37 to $46 a month for a 40-year-old at $500,000.
Older Idaho figures are on the record too. Insure.com published a state table drawn from CompuLife data, last updated November 26, 2024, covering a 20-year $500,000 term policy at Preferred-class nonsmoker rates: $251 a year for a woman at 25 and $312 for a man, $304 and $359 at 35, $873 and $1,140 at 50, then $4,312 and $6,085 at 65. Those carry a 2024 date, so the shape of the curve is the durable part.

Three studies, three answers, one buyer
National studies price the same headline case, a 40-year-old man buying $500,000 of 20-year term, and none of them lands in the same place. NerdWallet reports $321 a year, built by averaging the lowest three rates at each age from LifeStein.com data. MoneyGeek reports $59 a month for average health. ValuePenguin reports $50 a month for excellent health, quoting John Hancock, MassMutual, New York Life, Securian and Transamerica.
That spread describes who got priced. Average health and excellent health are separate products from the underwriter's side, and averaging the three cheapest quotes at an age is a different exercise from averaging five large carriers. Name the study whenever you repeat one of these figures, because blending two of them produces a number that describes nobody.
One figure on the NerdWallet page carries its own footnote. The $26 a month headline is attributed to Policygenius data for a 40-year-old buying a 20-year $500,000 term policy, a separate provider from the LifeStein tables printed underneath it. Two datasets, one page. Do not read $26 as the monthly version of the $321 row.
Buyers guess far higher than any of these. The 2026 Insurance Barometer Study from LIMRA and Life Happens charts median estimates against actual cost by age band: under 31, $1,200 estimated against $192; ages 31 to 35, $900 against $204; ages 36 to 40, $500 against $252. Its 2025 edition found that about three-quarters of adults overestimate the cost, with the youngest and healthiest overestimating by seven to 12 times.
Term, whole and universal, as Idaho defines them
The Idaho Department of Insurance sets out the three families on its consumer page. Term life guarantees payment of the policy coverage limit (i.e. stated death benefit) if the covered person dies during the term period specified on the policy. Whole life provides coverage for the life of the insured and may also include cash value accumulation within the policy benefits. Universal life it calls permanent life insurance with an investment savings element and low premiums that are similar to those of term life insurance.
The price distance between the first two surprises most first-time buyers. MoneyGeek's 2026 tables put a 40-year-old man at $59 a month for $500,000 of 20-year term and $574 a month for whole life at that same death benefit. The whole life curve for a man at $500,000 runs $337 a month at 20, $428 at 30, $574 at 40, $862 at 50, $1,443 at 60, $2,908 at 70 and $6,647 at 80. Women price under men at every rung, from $303 at 20 to $5,869 at 80.
Cash value is what the extra premium is buying. Whether that trade fits your household is a question for a licensed adviser.
Tobacco, age and the no-questions option
Tobacco is the steepest rating factor in the published data. ValuePenguin's 2026 rows for a $500,000 20-year term policy put a 25-year-old nonsmoker at $31 a month against $86 for a smoker, a 40-year-old at $50 against $179, and a 65-year-old at $593 against $1,528. NerdWallet's annual smoker table pushes in the same direction, listing $1,455 a year for a man at 40 who smokes against $321 for the nonsmoker, and $8,435 at 60 against $2,331.
Age moves the number all by itself. MoneyGeek's monthly term rates for $500,000 over 20 years read $39 for a man at 25, $47 at 35, $59 at 40, $90 at 45, $137 at 50, $231 at 55 and $395 at 60. The women's column across those same ages runs $30, $37, $47, $69, $102, $168 and $286.
Idahoans who will not clear underwriting have one route named on MoneyGeek's Idaho page. Physicians Mutual sells guaranteed-issue coverage where approval is guaranteed with no medical exam or health questions required. On $15,000 of coverage, rates begin around $52 a month for a 55-year-old woman and $63 for a man, and average $72 for women and $92 for men at 65. Approval without health questions arrives with a $15,000 ceiling, and that ceiling is the trade.
Four deadlines Idaho law writes into your policy
Four sections of Idaho Code sit inside every life policy sold here, and every one of them is a clock.
- Twenty days to change your mind. Idaho Code 41-1935 requires each covered life policy and annuity to state that the buyer may return it within twenty days of delivery and get the premium refunded if, after examining it, the purchaser is not satisfied for any reason. A returned policy is void from the beginning, as though it had never been issued.
- Thirty days of grace on a late premium. Section 41-1904 requires a grace period of thirty days, or one month of not less than thirty days at the insurer's option, for any premium after the first policy year, and the policy stays in full force throughout it. The insurer may charge up to 6% annual interest on the overdue amount and may deduct an unpaid premium from a claim arising during that window.
- Two years until the contest window shuts. Section 41-1905 makes a policy incontestable, except for nonpayment of premiums, after two years in force during the insured's lifetime. Read the parenthetical: provisions relating to disability benefits and to additional benefits for death by accident or accidental means are carved out, so those riders never go incontestable alongside the rest of the contract.
- Thirty-one days to convert group coverage. Section 41-2018 lets a worker whose group life coverage ends take an individual policy from the same insurer without evidence of insurability, provided the application is made and the first premium paid within thirty-one days after termination.
That last clock is the one people lose. It starts the day the job ends, and nobody sends a reminder.
Coverage at work, carrier failure and the state's free desk
Group life through an employer is where most Idahoans first get covered, and the State of Idaho's own plan shows the usual shape. Basic life equals one time annual salary rounded up to the next highest $1000, plus $10,000 of spousal life and $5,000 of dependent life, with the state noting that it pays the premium and there is no cost to the employee. Voluntary Term Life can be added at one, two or three times salary up to $500,000, priced for fiscal 2027 from $0.04 per $1,000 of coverage a month at age 35 and under to $3.20 at 81 and over.
Employer-paid coverage carries a tax ceiling. IRS Publication 15-B for 2026 instructs employers to include in wages the cost of group-term life insurance beyond $50,000 of coverage, reduced by whatever the employee paid, reported in boxes 1, 3 and 5 of the W-2 and shown in box 12 with code C. The amount is subject to social security and Medicare taxes.
If a carrier fails, the Idaho Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association covers $300,000 in life insurance death benefits and $100,000 in net cash surrender or net cash withdrawal values, capped at $300,000 in the aggregate for all benefits on any one life. Protection generally comes from the association in your state of residence on the date of the liquidation order, wherever the policy was bought. For a policy nobody can locate, the NAIC runs a free Life Insurance Policy Locator that had taken 886,727 requests and produced 460,952 matches worth $10,117,434,892 in claims through August 31, 2024, on searches the NAIC says may take 90 business days or more.
Questions about a policy, an agent or a denied claim go to the Idaho Department of Insurance, which calls its Consumer Affairs section a free resource for general information, questions and complaints. The first thing it asks before you file is whether you have tried to resolve the matter with your insurance company or agent. Reach Consumer Affairs at (208) 334-4250 or 1-800-721-3272, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday except state holidays. Our Idaho car insurance and Boise home insurance guides cover those lines on their own pages.

Life insurance ownership sits at 52% of American adults, and 38% report a gap: 29% who need coverage (74 million people) plus 9% who need more (24 million).

How much does life insurance cost in Idaho?
The only 2026-dated Idaho carrier quotes come from MoneyGeek's Idaho page, and they price one person: a 40-year-old male nonsmoker in average health buying $500,000 of 20-year term. Twelve carriers quote him $46 to $59 a month, or $551 to $705 a year. Change the age, the sex, the tobacco status or the health class and the number moves, so treat that band as one worked example rather than a statewide average.
Which company is cheapest for life insurance in Idaho?
Banner Life and Transamerica tie at the bottom of MoneyGeek's 2026 Idaho table, both at $46 a month ($551 a year), with Penn Mutual next at $47 ($562) and Cincinnati Life at $49 ($593). Guardian Life anchors the top at $59 a month ($705). All twelve are priced for the same 40-year-old male nonsmoker at $500,000 of 20-year term, so the ordering can shift once an underwriter looks at your file.
Can I cancel a life insurance policy in Idaho after I buy it?
Yes, within twenty days. Idaho Code 41-1935 requires every covered life policy and annuity sold in Idaho to state that the purchaser may return it within twenty days of delivery and receive a refund of the premium paid if, after examining the policy, the purchaser is not satisfied with it for any reason. A policy returned that way is void from the beginning, as if it had never been issued. That twenty-day window is the cheapest second look you will get.
What happens if I miss a life insurance premium in Idaho?
Idaho Code 41-1904 requires a grace period of thirty days, or one month of not less than thirty days at the insurer's option, on any premium after the first policy year, and the policy stays in full force during it. The insurer may charge up to 6% annual interest on the overdue premium, and if a claim arises inside the grace period the unpaid premium can be deducted from the proceeds. Industrial life policies billed more often than monthly get four weeks instead.
Can an Idaho insurer contest my policy years later?
Only in narrow circumstances. Idaho Code 41-1905 requires that a policy be incontestable, except for nonpayment of premiums, after it has been in force during the insured's lifetime for two years from its date of issue. The parenthetical in the statute matters: provisions relating to disability benefits and to additional benefits for death by accident or accidental means are excluded, so those riders stay contestable after the two-year mark. If a claim is denied, the Idaho Department of Insurance takes complaints at (208) 334-4250 or 1-800-721-3272.
What happens to my life insurance when I leave an Idaho job?
Idaho Code 41-2018 gives you thirty-one days. A worker whose group life coverage terminates may have an individual policy issued by the same insurer without evidence of insurability, provided the application is made and the first premium paid within thirty-one days after that termination. Group coverage is usually thinner than people assume: the State of Idaho's employee plan pays basic life equal to one time annual salary rounded up to the next highest $1000, plus $10,000 of spousal and $5,000 of dependent life.
What if my Idaho life insurance company goes out of business?
The Idaho Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association steps in, up to published limits: $300,000 in life insurance death benefits and $100,000 in net cash surrender or net cash withdrawal values, with $300,000 as the aggregate cap on all benefits for any one life. Coverage generally comes from the association in your state of residence on the date of the liquidation order, regardless of where the policy was purchased. If the paperwork itself has gone missing, the NAIC's free Life Insurance Policy Locator searches member companies, and the NAIC warns it may take 90 business days or more.
